ARCOlisboa, the international contemporary art fair organised by IFEMA MADRID and the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, will hold its 8th edition from 29 May to 1 June at its regular venue the Cordoaria Nacional, once again making the Portuguese capital one of the most attractive and engaging centres of art and culture in Europe, as well as a meeting place for collectors, gallery owners, artists and professionals from around the world.

Featuring 82 galleries from 17 countries, ARCOlisboa will showcase Portugal’s art scene in a broad dialogue with Spanish and European art. The Fair will be divided into three areas: the General Programme consisting of 61 galleries and a series of curated sections; Opening Lisboa with 16 galleries; and As Formas do Oceano (The Shapes of the Ocean) with 5 galleries.

This year, Portuguese galleries represent more than 37% of the fair, with a total of 30 galleries participating. The international segment accounts for 63% of the total- 52 galleries – mainly from Europe, with a significant number from countries such as Spain, Germany and Italy, as well as Brazil.

Art programme

At the heart of the fair is the General Programme, which has continued to grow, and this year will include 61 galleries selected by the Organising Committee. A number of galleries, such as Travesía Cuatro, Duarte Sequeira, Set Espai d’Art and Each Modern, will be taking part for the first time. A number of participants have returned after being absent for a few editions, such as Vermelho, Nuno Centeno, Rosa Santos, Fonseca Macedo and Galería de las Misiones, while others, like Bianca Boeckel and Nave will be present in the general section after participating in OPENING Lisboa last year. Regular participants include Bruno Múrias, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Francisco Fino, Madragoa, Pedro Cera, Vera Cortês, así como Carlier | Gebauer, Leandro Navarro, Sabrina Amrani, Zeller Van Almisck and 3+1 Arte Contemporânea, among others.

SOLO projects, which are part of the General Programme, will also be featured and will offer an in-depth look at the work of international artists. Among them, Karlo Andrei Ibarra (ATM), Klaas Vanhee (Silvestre Gallery), Amélie Esterházy (Behncke), Manuel M. Romero (Artnueve), Ricardo Cases (Ángeles Baños), Sonia Navarro (T20), Miki Leal (El Apartmento), Justin Weiler (Romero Paprocki) and Diogo Pimentão (Encounter).

Meanwhile, the Opening Lisboa section will explore new artistic languages and spaces in order to attract new content to the fair. With this in mind, this programme – with artworks selected by Sofía Lanusse and Diogo Pinto – will allow visitors to the fair to explore creations at 16 galleries, including: 4710 Gallery, winner of the OPENING Lisbon Award 2024; Beta Contemporary, Salgadeiras and Kandlhofer, who are participating for the second time; and ADZ gallery, Simo Bacar, Contemporary Cluster, Ackerman Clarke, Río & Meñaka, Moria galería, Dialogue and Salon Comunal who are taking part for the first time.

The OPENING Lisboa space will be custom designed by the Portuguese architectural studio Feeders.

At this edition, and for the sixth year in a row, ARCOlisboa will present the OPENING Lisboa Award whose judging panel – made up of professionals from the sector – will choose the best booth in the section, gifting the winner the cost of setting up the booth at the Fair.

The artistic content of this year’s edition is rounded off by the programme As Formas do Oceano (The Shapes of the Ocean), curated by Paula Nascimento and Igor Simões, and will feature projects that focus on relations between Africa and the African diaspora and other latitudes. It will include a total of 5 galleries: African Arty from Morocco; Afronova from South Africa; Christophe Person from France; Karla Osorio from Brazil; and Reiners Contemporary Arte from Spain.

ArtsLibris is once again present at ARCOlisboa with some thirty national and international exhibitors. Located in the Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria, access is free for the general public. Contemporary art magazines will also play a leading role in this space. In addition to being a place specialising in art publications, photobooks, contemporary thought, self-publishing and digital publications, it offers attendees a range of presentations and debates in the ArtsLibris Speakers Corner, where participating publishers will talk about their publications and editorial lines.

As a theoretical contextualisation, ARCOlisboa will offer its traditional debate and reflection programme which, with the support of Fundação Millennium bcp, will continue to promote the fair as a driver of thought on contemporary art. The Torreão Nascente will host the Millennium Art Talks, organised by EGEAC and curated by Filipa Oliveira.

The general public will also have the chance to enjoy this special encounter with contemporary art from Friday 30 May to Sunday 1 June. To make the fair accessible to an even greater number of people, visitors under 25 may enter free of charge from 15:00 onwards on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 May.

ARCOlisboa will be a veritable week of art for the city, collaborating, as in previous editions, with the main local art institutions, and offering a parallel cultural programme for national and international guests, including openings, visits to exhibitions and private collections, as well as other events. This all comes at a time when contemporary art in Lisbon is experiencing a period of great vibrancy, and this is also reflected in the opening of new spaces such as the Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martins (MACAM) and the forthcoming reopening of the Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian (CAM). These are in addition to other landmarks such as the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT), the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea – Museu do Chiado, the Museo Coleçao Berardo and various other institutions that consolidate the city as a must-visit destination on the international art circuit, as are, for example, the EGEAC galleries, among others.

ARCOlisboa is co-organised by the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, with the support of Ministério da Cultura / DGARTES, Fundação EDP, Fundação Millennium BCP, Fundação Vasco Vieira de Almeida and Turismo de Lisboa, MEXTO Property Investment, WAAU (World African Artists United), Bellissimo Cafés / Marca Grupo Nabeiro, Super Bock Group, Artworks, Ruinart, Valor Pneu, Herdade Aldeia de Cima, Quinta Nova, Taboadella, and Me Lisbon by Meliã, and with the local coordination of Café Pessoa – Cultural Strategies.

From April 11, 2025 to February 28, 2026, Fondation H invites British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare for a carte blanche entitled Safiotra [Hybridités/Hybridities], marking his first major showcase on the African continent. The exhibition occupies the 2,200-square-meter Fondation H building in downtown Antananarivo.

The solo exhibition features artwork spanning 20 years of Shonibare’s career, including The African Library (2018), part of Fondation H’s permanent collection. This monumental installation comprises 6,000 books wrapped in Dutch wax print fabric, each embossed with the name of a personality who shaped postcolonial Africa. The installation is complemented by a digital interface providing historical and biographical information about these figures.

The exhibition also presents a series of iconic sculptures by Yinka Shonibare, such as Refugee Astronaut X (2024), created by the artist in the context of Madagascar. It further includes works from his series Hydrid Mask and Hybrid Sculpture, three Decolonized Structures from Yinka Shonibare’s 2024 solo show at the Serpentine (London), and earlier works like Alien Man on Flying Machine (2011) and Alien Woman on Flying Machine (2011).

Safiotra [Hybridités/Hybridities] is enriched by a curated selection from the Fondation H collection, chosen by Shonibare. This complementary exhibition features works by 20 artists, including Kelani Abass (Nigeria), Malika Agueznay (Morocco), Amina Agueznay (Morocco), El Anatsui (Ghana), Leilah Babirye (Uganda), Virginia Chihota (Zimbabwe), Safaa Erruas (Morocco), Jems Koko Bi (Côte d’Ivoire), Abdoulaye Konaté (Mali), Ibrahim Mahama (Ghana), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Ouattara Watts (Côte d’Ivoire/USA), and Madame Zo (Madagascar). The curated dialogue explores the construction of African history post-independence.

The Malagasy word “safiotra” conveys the idea of hybridization—a fusion of two elements or identities that create a new entity while preserving their distinct characteristics. When applied to humans, it denotes a person of mixed heritage who integrates elements of both origins without being confined to either. This concept extends to objects, ideas, or concepts born from the convergence of contrasting realities.

Fondation H has organized a diverse array of events and activities for the Malagasy public. The opening highlight on April 11–12, 2025, features discussions and performances involving local and international personalities. Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Fondation H hosts public events, including conferences, lectures, workshops, performances, and screenings. Tailored tours and workshops are conducted year-round for specific audiences, such as children aged 6 to 14 (through school partnerships and children’s aid organizations) and disabled visitors, with accessible tours offered in Malagasy Sign Language or adapted formats in collaboration with NGOs.

A partnership has also been set up between Fondation H and G.A.S. Foundation, a foundation created by the artist in 2019 in Nigeria. Taking The African Library as a starting point, Fondation H and G.A.S. Foundation are proposing a cross-residency program, bringing together Antananarivo and Lagos.

An exhibition catalog accompanies Safiotra [Hybridités/Hybridities], published in June 2025 by Fondation H. The trilingual catalog (French/Malagasy/English) includes exhibition views, artwork photographs, and five commissioned essays, including contributions from Gus Casely-Hayford (Director of V&A East, London) and Professor Tiana Razafindratsimba Dominique (expert in language science and interculturality, University of Antananarivo).

In her first solo exhibition at Southern Guild, Usha Seejarim interrogates the domestic sphere as a site of servitude, subversion and resilience through an intersectional lens.

Found objects emblematic of domestic labour – such as clothes pegs, ironing soleplates, brooms and serving trays – are repurposed and reframed to explore themes of oppression and agency in relation to gender, race and class.

In the repetitive acts of assembling, Seejarim evokes the relentless, cyclical nature of domestic labour – traditionally gendered as women’s work. She deliberately reconfigures these items to highlight the interplay between the materials’ original function and the denial of their utilitarianism through art-making, transforming symbols of domesticity and containment into objects of liberation and ambiguity. Instruments of cleaning, folding, holding, washing, pressing and smoothing become statements of resistance and individuality.

The artist states: “At the heart of my exploration is the complex relationship between servitude and sexuality. Domestic labour carries with it an inherent tension between obligation and identity. The transformation of household objects into sculptural forms invites viewers to reflect on societal expectations that confine and define roles tied to care-giving and service.”

Seejarim asserts the centrality of the feminine experience through the articulation of vulvic forms, confronting societal taboos around the female body while reclaiming its power. Receptacles, nest-like objects and ovoid shapes predominate, poised between containment and constriction. A wall-based work reaching two and a half metres high and titled Contours of Isolation, layers densely packed rows of reclaimed iron sole plates into a sharply tapered ellipse – an armoured portal inviting both passage and defence. Seejarim’s sculptures pivot on their references to the body: tongue-like forms extend downwards invoking the Goddess Kali, a forest of phalluses rise from a decorative serving tray, sheaths of conjoined wooden clothes pegs part and close in fleshy contours. In reforming domestic objects in this way, the artist points to the intimate connections between physicality and the structures of power that shape lived experiences. The works speak to the intersections of vulnerability and strength, subordination and defiance, intimacy and universality.

Seejarim’s abstraction of these objects – negating their intended purpose to become vessels of collective memory – is an act of liberation, not only for the physical things themselves, but also for the location of women in relation to capitalist consumption. Unfolding Servitude gives voice to invisible labour while simultaneously critiquing the systems that advocate these roles.

Renowned for his dynamic fusion of contemporary portraiture, fashion, and pop culture, Hajjaj brings his signature aesthetic to a striking series that turns its focus to an unexpected yet evocative subject: legs and feet.

With this series, Hajjaj continues his exploration of identity, migration, and cultural hybridity. The exhibition introduces nine new portraits of legs adorned in vibrantly mismatched textiles, patterned socks, and boldly colored footwear, forming a visual symphony of textures and tones. Framed using his signature materials—vividly colored plastic mats and repurposed, hand-painted tires—these compositions transform the lower half of the body into a striking symbol of movement, displacement, and resilience. These unconventional materials not only enhance the visual dynamism of the works but also reinforce Hajjaj’s deep engagement with upcycling and the aesthetics of global street culture.

“In the olden days,” Hajjaj reflects, “people walked everywhere… your grandparents would tell you stories about how when they went to Algiers, it took them three months walking.” The imagery in Legs pays tribute to this history of physical journeys while also speaking to the modern experience of global nomads—individuals whose lives are shaped by the intersections of cultures, traditions, and geographies.
